According to Marshall and Bangert (2008) the kidneys have three major functions. Firstly, the kidneys are excretion of waste from plasma in the blood.
The second function is that, they maintain of extracellular fluid volume and composition. Lastly, the kidneys have a role in hormone synthesis.
The kidneys are two in number, usually bean shaped, and exist behind the peritoneum on either side of the vertebral column extending from the 12th thoracic to the 3rd lumbar vertebra.
Each kidney weighs about 120-170 grams and is about 11-13 cms. long, the left being larger than the right one.
Some may think that minor daily bad habits won’t count on damaging their kidneys. Well, to tell the truth whether minor or major issues if it is bad to our health, it will affect our body in the long run. 1. Not drinking enough water
Keep your kidneys healthy by being “water wise.” This means drinking the right amount of water for you. As recommended, 8 glasses per day but it may always vary by person and situations. About 60-70% of your body weight is made up of water, and every part of your body needs it to function properly. Water helps the kidneys remove wastes from your blood in the form of urine. Water also helps keep your blood vessels open so that blood can travel freely to your kidneys, and deliver essential nutrients to them.
2. Too Much Salt
Giving a lot of stress to the kidney is consuming too much that can trigger high blood pressure. Even though salt is very essential mineral for our health in general but still whatever excessive in terms of consuming in the long run it affect our overall health and create severe issues.
3. Holding It In
There will be a time that you resisting the urge to urinate due to busy at that moment which is a part of bad habit of many people. In most cases, this pressure gets placed directly on the kidneys, leads to kidney stones, kidney failure, kidney disease or incontinence.
4. Too Much Sugar
Once again, consuming excessive of dosage like sugar will also put its fair share of tension and burden on the kidneys. People who consumed 2 or more sugary drinks per day end up having protein in their urine, which means the kidneys aren’t working like they should be according to research.
5. Mineral and Vitamin Deficiencies
In result it can lead to a whole list of health conditions, such as kidney stones and kidney disease if some of the people will engage into a poor diet to lose weight (mostly poor in essential vitamins and mineral). For that reason, add more fruits, vegetables, and homemade meals to your diet.
6. Excessive Amounts of Animal Protein
Particularly red meat it can cause accumulation of lots of processed protein in the body, which as a result can increase the metabolic load on the kidneys. In this reason the kidneys will overwork and such constant stress can lead to kidney damage and dysfunction.
7. Lack of Sleep
In order to heal and recharge our body and mind, we need to get enough sleep and sleeping is one of the most important things we do that surely everybody will agree. Sleep deficiency on the other hand damages the bones, causes stress and kidney problems.
8. Caffeine Consumption
Be mindful of consuming something that it can be a part of bad habits just like excessive of sugar, salt and caffeine. It can increase blood pressure, place a lot of stress on the kidneys, and cause impairment in excess of time.
9. Intake Painkillers
When body aches or any other pain attacks, people may seek immediately over-the-counter pain killer medicines as their solution to relief pain. 10. Alcohol Abuse
